Well, I decided to get out for a quick 15-20 mile gravel grinder at lunch today. I was about three miles from getting back home, and I was coming up a long, gradual incline. Up ahead, I spotted a scruffy older gentleman in overalls on a trike. You know the type: three 26 inch wheels with chrome fenders and a wire basket in the back for groceries.
After pedaling up the incline for a while, I noticed I just wasn’t gaining on this guy. Nada. He was on the gas. I couldn’t stand it – I had to catch this guy and see who the heck was hauling the groceries (and hauling something else as well…). I downed a swig of my Skratch Labs hydration mix and put the hammer down. OK, this time I’m gaining ground, but the guy on the trike looks like he’s doing an easy spin around the park…argh. As I get closer, I look down at my Garmin 510 to see my heart rate climbing – 160…168…172. That’s getting up there for an old guy.
Finally, I get close, swing out to pass him (I’m about to pass out), and see the groceries. Well, they weren’t exactly groceries he was hauling — they were two…large…BATTERIES!
I got a good laugh out of that one!
